Tibetan kids from poor rural areas are taught to beg from an early age. I made a deal with a young boy that if he let me take his photo I would pay him money for it. He agreed and I gave him 2 kuai. A big mistake. He was so thrilled he ran and told all the other kids and in a few seconds I had about a dozen kids running after me looking for money. I literally ran in circles around my guide and dodged back and forth between tourists and pilgrims to avoid them, and I have to admit I was having fun, but then stopped and gave them 1 kuai each. I had a bunch of small notes in my pocket just for such situations.
